NEW YORK -- Braves pitchers are thankful Andrelton Simmons is their shortstop and not another powerful pitching arm. Willie McGee .The 24-year old would not sign with Atlanta in 2010 unless the Braves allowed him to remain in the infield. With the potential tying run on third base in the eighth inning Wednesday night, he ranged onto the outfield grass to snag Travis dArnauds grounder, then made a one-hop throw to first baseman Freddie Freeman. That preserved the lead as the Braves beat the New York Mets 3-2 behind Julio Teherans strong start to stop a three-game losing streak."Two out, man on third, not only does he make the play, but he makes an accurate throw to first base," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Today, Teheran should take him out to dinner because he saved him the win."Teheran (13-9) gave up three hits in 6 1-3 innings, struck out four and walked two."My fastball was working and I threw my changeup more," he said. "I think thats how I got them off-balance."Jason Heyward connected on Zack Wheelers third pitch of the game for his 11th homer of the season. After Wilmer Flores home run tied the game in the second, the Braves went ahead for good in the third when Phil Gosselin reached on a bunt single, Freddie Freeman doubled, Justin Upton hit a broken-bat RBI groundout and shortstop Ruben Tejada allowed Evan Gattis two-out bouncer to pop out of his glove for a run-scoring error."Justins at-bat was huge," Heyward said. "It was a broken bat and scored the go-ahead run. When you put the ball in play, it puts pressure on the defence. And then when Gattis put the ball in play, they made an error and it led to another run."Craig Kimbrel allowed Eric Campbells leadoff single in the ninth and walked Matt den Dekker. After Flores sacrificed, Gosselin threw out Campbell at the plate on Tejadas grounder to third and pinch-hitter Kirk Nieuwenhuis flied hit a game-ending flyout. Kimbrel got his 39th save in 43 chances.Juan Lagares had an RBI single in the eighth off Jordan Walden before Lucas Duda grounded into a double play. Then came Simmons sterling throw."It looks like he has no chance, and then in the last second, he just reaches for it and throws it," dArnaud said. "What a great play."Wheeler (9-9) gave up three runs -- two earned -- four hits and three walks in seven innings with seven strikeouts. He had been 6-0 with a 2.12 ERA in 10 starts since losing to Oakland on June 25.Atlanta began the night 1 1/2 games behind San Francisco for the second NL wild card.TRAINERS ROOMBraves: LHP Jonny Venters has been told to stop throwing following recurring soreness in his surgically repaired elbow. Venters has had two Tommy John reconstructive surgeries and was examined Wednesday by Dr. James Andrews. ... RHP Gavin Floyd will not throw until October following a visit with Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek on Tuesday. The right-hander is recovering from June surgery to repair a fractured elbow. ... 3B Chris Johnson was given the day off.Mets: RHP Vic Black (neck) and LHP Josh Edgin (elbow) both remained unavailable. Mets manager Terry Collins said the team will be without Black for a couple of days and said Edgin is dealing with a bone spur-like issue. ... 2B Daniel Murphy (calf) and David Wright (neck) remained out of the lineup; Wright took a few swings in the indoor batting cages prior to the game. "Todays the day where he needs to do some stuff and to see how he comes out of it," Collins said.UP NEXTMike Minor (5-8, 4.90 ERA) pitches Thursday night for Atlanta against New Yorks Jonathon Niese (7-9, 3.47 ERA) in a matchup of left-handers in the series finale. This will be the fourth career matchup between the two.POWER DISPLAYNew York has homered in eight straight games for the first time since starting 2013 with 12 in a row.WHEELING AND DEALINGWheeler has not allowed multiple home runs in his last 37 starts.ONE-RUN GAMESAtlanta improved to 22-22 in one-run games this year, and the Mets dropped to 20-26.         Lane Thomas .You can watch all the action on TSN and TSN GO beginning at 8:30pm et/5:30pm pt.Minnesota dropped the first two tests of this best-of-seven set at Chicagos United Center and was outscored by a combined 9-3 margin in those setbacks. However, the Wild righted themselves at home by taking Game 3 by a 4-0 count before knotting the series at two games apiece with Fridays 4-2 triumph at Xcel Energy Center. Ramon Urias .The Raptors had an early deadline Sunday, a dreaded afternoon game, and they left the bulk of their work until the last minute, as theyve done so many times before. The New Jersey Devils added a veteran scoring winger who has trouble staying healthy, but is coming off a terrific season.Numbers Game looks at the Devils signing Mike Cammalleri. The Devils Get: LW Mike Cammalleri.Cammalleri, 32, has been a productive goal-scorer, topping 20 goals six times in his career, but hes also had a hard time staying healthy, missing at least 15 games in four of the past five seasons. However, if a team understands that injuries are likely to be part of the package, they can also understand that a healthy Cammalleri has not only has he been able to score, but last season he was really effective as an all-around player, putting up strong relative possession numbers despite facing high-quality opposition and starting more of his shifts in the defensive zone. Those relative possession stats were dramatically better than previous seasons, so that doesnt necessarily mean thats his standard level, but its some evidence that Cammalleri is more than just a triggerman. Hes joining a Devils team that already puts up strong possession numbers, but has been unable to finish enough. For whatever it might be worth, Cammalleri is also 7-for-20 (35.0%) in shootouts over the past five years, and while thats a little above average, its miles ahead of what the Devils mustered as a team last year, when they were 4-for-51 (7.8%) in losing all 13 shootout decisions. While Cammalleri plays frequently on tthe wing, hes also played centre -- took the second-most draws on the Flames in 2012-2013 -- and that could be useful for the Devils, who are going to have to mix and match some pieces up front, but have enough to put together three pretty solid lines. Steve Carlton. Adding a goal-scorer certainly addresses the Devils needs. They ranked 27th in the league with 2.40 goals per game last season, so adding a proven finisher is worthwhile. The trouble, as it often seems to be with the Devils, is that the term is steep for a 32-year-old. Maybe five years and $25-million is the going rate for what Cammalleri provides, but its hard to envision the Devils getting a positive return on investment when Cammalleri is 35 and 36-years-old. Sure, New Jersey has been getting great production from Jaromir Jagr and Patrik Elias, who are well beyond that age but, among 32 forwards who were at least 35-years-old last season, five managed to score more than 20 goals. The Flames will miss Cammalleri. They added Mason Raymond as a free agent, and Raymonds speed is an asset, but hes not the same kind of offensive threat that Cammalleri is, so its hard to expect that the Flames will thrive offensively without their third-leading scorer from last season.Scott Cullen can be reached at Scott.Cullen@bellmedia.ca and followed on Twitter at http://twitter.com/tsnscottcullen.
